1st Missing Clue

Who was "cousin" James Wanless's mother? We have no birth certificate yet.

We know from "cousin" James's death certificate that his father was John Wanless, who (like "cousin" James) was a baker, but the mother's name was not listed.

Can we find proof that "cousin" James's father, John Wanless, was the John Wanless who married Margaret Ramsay?

Where can we look for evidence that Margaret Ramsay was "cousin" James's mother?

Linking "cousin" James Wanless to the Ramsay family strengthens the link to our James Wanlass (the miner), because our James said he was raised by a Ramsay family when he was a boy. It makes sense that he might have been raised by relatives.

Done research myself at Register House in Edinburgh for birth and marriage certificates for James Wanless ( the baker) Nothing found.

So I contacted a Professional Researcher to do some searching for me. Results were :-

Searched for birth of a James to John Wanless ( varies spellings) in yrs. 1830 - 1825 found one in Dundee (note with only one S in name.

Old Parish Register 282/15 Dundee.

Birth 8 Aug. 1825 Parents John Wanles, a seaman and Mary McKay ? child James.

He also searched for marriage of James Wanless & Christina Parkinson in the yrs. 1842-1852 Not Found.

I asked if James could have been a informant on his mothers death cert. So he looked for death of Margaret Ramsay/ Wanless.

Searched Statutory Index 1855-1913 for her death. Not Found. Both Holly and I thought she would have died before 1841 as she was not on the 1841 census.

After not getting any where. I contacted Register House in Edinburgh, for birth of James thinking I may have missed it when I was there, but they only found the same one as above.

Searched for death of John Wanless (James's father ) in Dundee and Edinburgh to see if he was married to Margaret Ramsay. not found.

After all that I just gave up.

Sorry we don't have any photos of our ancestors.

Margaret Wanless.

Margaret,

The James Wanles, whose father was John Wanles (a seaman) and mother was Mary McKay, married Mary Baxter Ramsay in 1850. James and his wife Mary show up together in several censuses. His occupation was seaman or shipping reporter. He died in 1896.

So, eventhough his father was named John, he was not our "cousin" James Wanless (the baker) or our James Wanlass (the miner.)

It is interesting that this is another instance of a Wanless affiliated with a Ramsay.
